The Transmission Company of Nigeria has secured more than $1.4 billion in loans and grants from development partners to expand and strengthen the country’s electricity transmission network.
TCN disclosed the funding during a media training workshop in Keffi, Nasarawa State, where its Executive Director of Transmission Service Provider, Ajiboye Oluwagbenga, outlined recent investments and developments in the national grid.
According to the company, the financing has been mobilised from development partners including the World Bank, African Development Bank, Agence Française de Développement and the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
TCN said the funding will support projects aimed at improving the capacity and reliability of the transmission network as the country works to strengthen electricity supply.
The transmission company also disclosed that 89 transformers have been commissioned across the country over the past 12 months as part of efforts to reinforce the network.
TCN’s latest investment comes as Nigeria continues to face challenges across its electricity value chain, from generation and transmission to distribution. Improvements in transmission infrastructure are intended to make it easier to move available electricity from power plants to distribution networks.
For businesses, the significance of the investment extends beyond the transmission network itself. More reliable electricity transmission could help reduce some of the pressure on manufacturers and other businesses that rely heavily on alternative power sources when public supply is inadequate.
However, expanding transmission capacity alone will not resolve Nigeria’s electricity problems. The benefits will depend on corresponding improvements in power generation, distribution infrastructure and the financial health of the electricity market.
TCN’s disclosure therefore represents an important infrastructure investment, but its ultimate impact will be measured by how much additional electricity the national grid can reliably deliver to homes and businesses.
The company is expected to continue implementing transmission projects financed through the development partnerships as Nigeria seeks to improve the reliability and capacity of its national electricity system.
